Kings Mill School has won two major sporting awards at the Annual Disability Sport Yorkshire Awards held at Leeds United's Elland Road Conference Centre on Friday 11 March.

The school, based on Victoria Road in Driffield, was nominated in the "School of the Year" category and was commended for participating in a wide range of sports, actively encouraging pupils whatever their ability to enjoy and achieve in sport.  It was also acknowledged by the judging committee that Kings Mill School achieves all of this with very few facilities and a complete lack of outdoor space.

The successful evening was complete when Andy Watts, the School's Sport Coordinator, was awarded the prestigious Chairman's Service to Sports Award for his work in the Yorkshire and Humber region; promoting, encouraging and developing inclusive sport in schools, colleges and community groups as part of Kings Mill School's role as Lead Inclusion School for the Youth Sport Trust.

The judging panel criteria for the award was looking for an "individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of sport and a strong commitment to raising the profile of disability and sport".

Some of the highlights of Andy's work were picked out by the judging panel:

  • Introduced and coached inclusive sports to 2267 pupils and students
  • Introduced and coached inclusive sports to 615 school staff
  • Introduced and coached inclusive sports to 83 coaches
  • Delivered awareness training to 75 schools

Kings Mill School is immensely proud of the achievements of their children (and staff) in sport and with the development of the new school and the dedicated commitment of its staff it is hoped that improved facilities will lead to further success in the future both on and off the field.

The East Riding School Sport Partnership (West) was proud to attend the evening and celebrate with Andy and the staff representing Kings Mill School and indeed, all of the other amazing award nominees' success in sport.
